Wondering what the preference is with fixed and adjustable-parallax scopes for target shooting? I prefer to have the adjustment to allow for varying ranges of target, but I hear of those who only use fixed-parallax scopes -- perhaps so they don't have to worry about adjusting it. Would anyone here even consider using a fixed-parallax scope for target shooting?

Short answer is "no". In Ireland we shoot targets from 10 Metres to over 1000 metres. Good scopes can cover this range. Most action with a rimfire rifle is from GRSBP at 25 metres to 100 metre prone. If your scope will not adjust for these distances then you are at a disadvantage.

I think what inspired bugs to ask this question was that we were both shooting my rifle a few days ago trying to sight it in. I had somehow knocked the parallax off a while ago. Although we started getting tighter and tighter groups after re-adjustment, their placement wasn't consistent. I was a bit paranoid that the scope was still off parallax wise. I guess using a fixed scope would rule out that problem, but as you say, you won't be able to adjust for other distances.

I need to get a new allen key to tighten the top screws that hold the scope into the mount to rule out the scope being loose which was suggested by bugs when we were shooting.

Thanks for the tip. I am looking at some on Amazon now. If I'm being honest it's been a few years since I last done anything with the scope on my rifle. I tend to just leave it after fixing it on. I think I will be making more of an effort to keep it on as tight as possible.

In all honesty, I've never used a torque driver on a sporter — only on a match rifle, and even then only when my setup is well configured that bolt/screw torque would be a consideration. How much of a difference would you say that torquing scope mounts makes?

Well it's in the post now anyway. I'll update if it improves the group placement. If it doesn't I'll have to find another scope to see if that's the issue.

Just an update on the scope situation. There were a couple of small scews loose on top of the scope mount. I tightened them with my new screw driver and went out this evening for a short while to see if there was any improvement. My grouping was a bit wider but group placement was a whole lot better. I would say that the issue I was having was due to a loose screw because the placement this time was very consistent. The wider group I put down to giving myself a short time period of shooting which lead to some rushed shots. I.E that's on me and not the scope.
